Willy Spiller’s images are as much a visual document of this incomparable underground territory as they are an ode to the city and its people. Spiller documented his underground travels with curiosity and admiration, it’s as if he wants to show a routine that is unique and the effervescent feelings of the city. While the train travels, we make a fascinating and soulful trip to the New York subway’s past too.
It’s the first rap music, graffiti and strong police raids period. Therefore all the photographs in this wonderful book of the New York City underground are brilliant, but we guess we all have a weakness for one picture which it is exceptional, a colourful poem of a crew of high school girls with their uniforms, carefree, bathed in a beautiful summer sunshine. Just for that worth the trip!
The rhythmic movement of the wagon and the pages put us right to dream.
