Shizu 7132 is a rare and captivating Japanese tea cultivar primarily used for green teas like sencha, but it can also be processed into an exceptional Japanese black tea, or wakoucha. Originally, tea farmers in Shizuoka planted Cultivar 7132 because of its strong frost resistance, but they quickly recognized its true uniqueness after the very first harvests and production batches due to its natural sakura scent. When crafted as a black tea, Shizu 7132 offers a smooth, medium-bodied cup characterized by a malty sweetness, rich notes of baked stone fruit and dark honey. It delivers a crisp, clean finish with a lingering floral aftertaste and exceptionally low astringency.
What truly sets Shizu 7132 apart is an enchanting, entirely natural fragrance that mimics the essence of spring. The leaves hold a high concentration of coumarin, the exact organic compound responsible for the intoxicating scent of pickled cherry blossoms (sakura) and traditional Japanese sweets. Free from the artificial oils or synthetic additives found in typical flavored teas, this authentic aroma transports you directly to Japan during peak cherry blossom season. The experience begins the moment you open the bag, releasing notes of warm vanilla and sweet pastry alongside freshly unfurled petals. Even before brewing, the visual appeal is striking, featuring small to medium-sized leaves of a deep, graphite black. As they steep, they transform the water into a brilliant, light reddish-brown liquor that softly fades into a golden yellow at the edges. Mild yet deeply aromatic, this beautifully crafted tea offers a multi-layered sensory journey that lingers long after your final sip.
